Typemoji is a generative typographic system based on speech recognition. The concept is developed through research and analysis of already existing social media platforms, and finally delivered through motion graphics.

Technique: Motion Graphics, UX/UI Research // Design Tools: After Effects, Illustrator // Duration: 4 weeks // The Ask: Create time-based design piece about the intervention to add on to the existing social media platforms // Collaborator: Faith Kim //

PROBLEM SPACE

We started off with researching and analyzing about the history, use, function, and problems about the three existing social media platforms of our choice. We dissected Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, focusing on the different means of communication each platform offers.

The most crucial part that we noticed then and eventually tried to address through our piece was that all of those social media platforms try to offer different options for people beyond mere text and images to convey their emotions (ex. like buttons, stickers, emojis, gifs). However, we found all of them somehow either functionally or conceptually lacking, not only because a lot of them were often confusing and misleading, but also since none of them were fully effective in getting across a clear yet engaging message.

PROCESS

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
There we came up with the concept of Typemoji, a generative typographic system based on speech recognition technology. The system would read the tone, expression, pace, and fluctuation of the user's voice and then translate that into expressive typography. The user would be able to manipulate and customize the generated type so that it best reflect what they intended the word, phrase, sentence, or even a paragraph to feel like.
STORYBOARDING
DELIVERABLE
In contrary to the concept we are presenting which is based on modern technology, we used a visual style for the first half of the video that emulates early desktop interface. The decision was made because since we are navigating through histories of something that has become so universal such as Facebook or emoji, so it made sense that we went back to something traditional. We also wanted to communicate that existing methods of communications are growing old and dull through not using any color until we introduce Typemoji.

The dramatic contrast between the rather analytical first half of the video and experimental second half is I think the most impactful aspect of this video and communicates our idea effectively.
